We had a trade name conflict with an existing DET business. myHQ suggested three alternatives the same day and we were approved within 48 hours. The process I thought would take weeks took 3 days.

Business Setup in Ajman: Structures, Costs and Process (2026)
Ajman is the UAE’s smallest emirate by land at 259 sq km, but right now one of its fastest-growing by business registrations. Its free zones added companies at a 216% year-on-year rate in 2025, and now host 20,000+ companies from 160+ nationalities. Ajman pairs one of the UAE’s lowest entry costs with a genuine offshore registry and rare payment flexibility, offering 2, 3 or 6 instalments on a free zone licence, which most competing free zones do not.
This guide to business setup in Ajman covers company formation structures, authorities, costs, processes and compliance obligations for 2026, including cost and structural comparisons against Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Company Formation in Ajman: Structures Available in 2026
Company formation in Ajman runs through three structures: a free zone company, an Ajman DED mainland company or an AFZ Offshore company.
Ajman Free Zone Business Setup
Ajman runs three free zones, each at a different stage of maturity, so Ajman free zone business setup comes down to activity fit and how much established infrastructure you need:
AFZ (Ajman Free Zone), also written AFZA: Ajman’s largest and oldest free zone, built around trading and general business with direct access to Ajman Port. 8,000+ companies and AED 2 billion+ in annual trade. From AED 6,000 a year, with 2, 3 or 6-instalment payment plans and up to 20% off multi-year licences, which is uncommon among UAE free zones.
AMCFZ (Ajman Media City Free Zone): media and e-commerce focused, with up to 5 activities on one licence, fully remote setup, and a licence issued in as little as 3 business days. From AED 8,500 a year. Established 2018.
ANCFZ (Ajman NuVentures Center Free Zone): Ajman’s newest free zone, launched October 2024, already with 6,500+ registered companies in its first year. Price on request.
Each zone publishes its own activity list, and activity choice determines which of the three you are eligible for.
Ajman Mainland Company Formation (Ajman DED)
The Ajman Department of Economic Development, commonly shortened to Ajman DED, is the emirate’s mainland licensing authority and the direct equivalent of Dubai’s DET, Abu Dhabi’s ADDED or Sharjah’s SEDD. An Ajman DED licence is what allows a business to trade directly in the Ajman mainland market rather than only within a free zone, while Ajman’s three free zones each have their own separate authority.
Ajman Offshore Company Setup (AFZ Offshore)
AFZ Offshore is a genuine offshore registry, one of only two in the Northern Emirates alongside RAK ICC. Ajman offshore company setup is used for international holding, investment and asset-protection structures rather than trading. An Ajman offshore company cannot trade inside the UAE and carries no office or visa requirement, which is what keeps annual maintenance low. It costs AED 9,000–19,000 a year depending on shareholder structure, whether that is an IBC or an LLC.
Ajman Business Setup Cost and Licence Fees
Ajman Free Zone License Cost
Ajman free zone license cost starts at AED 6,000 a year at AFZ and AED 8,500 at AMCFZ, covering the licence and registered address. Investor visas and the Emirates ID are charged separately.

India-to-Ajman All-In Cost for Indian Founders
MEA apostille for Indian documents: AED 1,500–3,000 equivalent
FEMA ODI declaration filing: AED 300–800 equivalent
Translation charges, if required: AED 500–1,500
Most Indian founders are quoted AED 10,000–13,000 for a fully operational AFZ company with one investor visa, bank account assistance and FEMA filing, which is the lowest all-in figure across the five UAE emirates myHQ currently covers, before Ajman’s instalment plan is even factored in.
Ajman Free Zone vs Mainland vs Offshore: Decision Guide
Choose an Ajman free zone if:
You want one of the UAE’s lowest entry costs, with instalment payment options
You’re an e-commerce, media or trading business matching AFZ or AMCFZ
You want to be an early mover in ANCFZ, Ajman’s newest fast-growing zone
You don’t need direct UAE mainland retail access
Choose Ajman DED mainland if:
You need to sell directly to UAE businesses or consumers
You’re opening a physical retail location or facility in Ajman
You need to bid on government contracts
Choose AFZ Offshore if:
You need a holding structure for assets, intellectual property or investments
You invoice internationally without needing UAE banking tied to physical operations
You have no employees or physical operations in the UAE
How to Start a Business in Ajman: Company Registration Step by Step
Free zone and Ajman DED mainland registration follow the same six stages; the differences sit in the authority, the documents and the timeline.
Choose your structure and activity. AFZ, AMCFZ or ANCFZ, matched to your activity, or an Ajman DED mainland activity: commercial, professional, industrial or tourism.
Reserve your trade name. Submitted to your chosen free zone authority, or to Ajman DED alongside initial approval for mainland companies.
Prepare and apostille documents. Passport copies, photos and the application form, with Indian documents apostilled via MEA India. Mainland limited liability companies also need a memorandum of association drafted, with attestation where required.
Submit your application and arrange your office. Free zone applications are submitted online via the zone’s portal. Mainland companies need a physical office or registered address.
Pay fees and receive your licence. 2–4 business days in a free zone, with instalment payment available at AFZ, and 5–10 business days in total for Ajman DED mainland.
Visa, Emirates ID and bank account. 2–4 weeks, through the same process for free zone and mainland companies.
Registering a Company in Ajman from India: What Indian Founders Must File
Indian residents investing in an Ajman company, whether free zone, mainland or AFZ Offshore, are making an Overseas Direct Investment (ODI) under FEMA. This requires filing Form ODI-1 with an Authorised Dealer bank before or at first investment, and an Annual Performance Report (APR) each year. Remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), up to USD 250,000 a year, must retain proper LRS documentation, and setup fees should be remitted via the company’s bank account with the correct purpose code. Ajman’s own instalment plan, in 2, 3 or 6 payments, can further ease the LRS remittance schedule.
All Indian government documents for Ajman registration need an MEA apostille, not just notarisation. Documents requiring apostille include passport copies, power of attorney, board resolutions and certificates of incorporation for Indian parent companies, with processing taking 5–7 working days.

Ajman Company Setup: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open a company in Ajman Free Zone?
Choose the free zone that matches your activity, reserve a trade name with that zone’s authority, and submit passport copies, photos and the application form online through the zone’s portal. Once fees are paid, the licence is typically issued in 2–4 business days, and visa, Emirates ID and bank account follow over 2–4 weeks.
Does Ajman offer instalment payments for a free zone licence?
Yes. AFZ is one of the few UAE free zones that accepts licence fees in 2, 3 or 6 instalments via post-dated UAE bank cheques, plus up to 20% off for a prepaid 2–3 year licence.
What is ANCFZ, and is a newer free zone a good choice?
ANCFZ, the Ajman NuVentures Center Free Zone, is Ajman’s newest free zone, launched in October 2024 and already home to 6,500+ registered companies in its first year. It suits founders who want to be early movers in a fast-growing zone. Pricing is on request, so compare it directly against AFZ and AMCFZ for your activity before deciding.
Can an Ajman free zone company have a corporate shareholder?
Yes. A company, including an Indian parent company, can hold shares in an Ajman free zone company. The parent’s certificate of incorporation and board resolution must be apostilled before submission, and Indian parent companies also fall under FEMA ODI rules on the Indian side.
How do I renew an Ajman free zone licence?
Free zone licences in Ajman are renewed every year with the issuing free zone authority, before the licence expires. Visa renewals and many banking requirements depend on a valid licence, so most founders start renewal a few weeks ahead. myHQ handles annual renewals as part of its post-setup support.
How do I close an Ajman free zone company?
Closing a free zone company is done through a cancellation or liquidation application with the issuing free zone authority. It generally involves cancelling all visas sponsored by the company, settling outstanding fees and liabilities, obtaining the required clearances, and then submitting the cancellation request for the licence itself.
