How much does it cost to set up a business in Sharjah?
A Sharjah free zone trade license starts around AED 5,750/year with SHAMS for a single professional activity. Mainland licenses through Sharjah DED/SEDD typically range from AED 18,000–35,000/year depending on activity and office requirement. Exact cost depends on your chosen zone, activity type and visa count.
How do I register a company in Sharjah?
You choose a jurisdiction (SHAMS, Hamriyah, SAIF Zone, Publishing City, or Sharjah mainland), select your business activity and license type, submit passport and application documents, and receive your trade license - typically within 5 working days for free zone entities. myHQ manages the entire filing process end-to-end.
Can I set up a Sharjah free zone company without visiting the UAE?
Yes. Most SHAMS, Hamriyah and SAIF Zone licenses can be set up fully remotely from India, with documents couriered and signed digitally. A UAE visit is typically only required for Emirates ID biometrics if you're applying for a residence visa, and even that can often be scheduled flexibly.
How do I renew my Sharjah trade license?
Renewal happens annually before your license expiry date and involves paying the renewal fee, confirming your registered address or flexi-desk package, and updating any changed shareholder or visa details. myHQ tracks your renewal date and handles the filing so there's no lapse risk.
Is a Sharjah company legal for Indian residents under FEMA?
Yes, provided the structure and reporting comply with FEMA's Overseas Direct Investment rules and any applicable RBI notification requirements. myHQ coordinates with your CA to ensure your Sharjah entity is set up in a FEMA-compliant way from the start.
Which is cheaper - Sharjah or Dubai business setup?
Sharjah is generally 25-40% cheaper than Dubai for an equivalent free zone license, primarily because Sharjah's SHAMS free zone has lower government fees and no mandatory physical office requirement for most activities.
Can I get an e-commerce license in Sharjah?
Yes - SHAMS Free Zone offers a dedicated e-commerce license that permits online retail and marketplace selling without requiring a warehouse or physical shopfront, making it one of the fastest and lowest-cost e-commerce setups in the UAE.

Business Setup in Sharjah: Complete Guide (2026)
Sharjah is the UAE’s third-largest emirate and its cultural and industrial heart, home to 19 industrial areas producing roughly 48% of the UAE’s total industrial output, and the only emirate with coastlines on both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. For cost-conscious founders, Sharjah is typically 30–50% cheaper than Dubai across licensing, office and visa costs, while offering the same 0% tax and 100% foreign ownership terms.
This guide covers company formation in Sharjah: structures, authorities, costs, processes and compliance obligations for 2026, including cost and structural comparisons against Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah.
Sharjah Company Formation: Structures Available in 2026
Every business in Sharjah is set up through one of two routes: a free zone or the mainland. Which one fits depends on where your customers are and what your business does.
The Free Zone Route
Sharjah’s free zones are each built around a distinct industry rather than general-purpose licensing, so the choice comes down to activity fit. myHQ sets up companies across five: SHAMS (Sharjah Media City) for media, marketing and professional services, from AED 5,750/year with no physical office required; SPC (Sharjah Publishing City) for publishing and content; SAIF Zone (Sharjah Airport International Free Zone) for trading, logistics and aviation; Hamriyah Free Zone for manufacturing and heavy industry; and SRTIP (Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park) for applied research and deep-tech.
Free zone companies offer 100% foreign ownership and remote registration, and trade within their zone and internationally. For licence types, full cost breakdowns and a zone-by-zone comparison, see our guide to Sharjah’s free zones.
The Mainland Route (SEDD)
The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) is Sharjah’s mainland licensing authority. A SEDD licence lets a business trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE rather than only within a free zone, and covers commercial, professional, industrial, tourism, home business and e-trader activities. Ownership rules, entity types and the full registration process are covered in our guide to the SEDD mainland licence.
No Offshore Registry
Sharjah does not operate an offshore registry. Unlike Dubai with JAFZA Offshore, or Ras Al Khaimah with RAK ICC, every Sharjah business is either a free zone or a mainland entity. That makes the structural decision here simpler than in the other emirates, since there are two options rather than three.
Sharjah Business Setup Cost
Starting costs by route for 2026:
Route
Year 1 starting cost
Investor visa (per visa)
SHAMS free zone (licence + address)
AED 5,750
AED 3,500–5,000
SAIF Zone (licence + address)
AED 10,800
AED 3,500–5,000
Hamriyah Free Zone (licence + address)
AED 14,500+ plus facility lease
AED 3,500–5,000
SEDD mainland (basic licence)
AED 12,000–15,000/year
AED 3,500–5,500
Add AED 370 per person for the Emirates ID. A general trading mainland licence runs higher, at AED 15,000–30,000/year all-in.
India-to-Sharjah All-In Cost for Indian Founders
MEA apostille for Indian documents: AED 1,500–3,000 equivalent
FEMA ODI declaration filing: AED 300–800 equivalent
Translation charges, if required: AED 500–1,500
Most Indian founders are quoted AED 12,000–16,000 for a fully operational SHAMS company with one investor visa, bank account assistance and FEMA filing, which is among the lowest all-in UAE company costs for Indian founders.
Free Zone or Mainland in Sharjah: Decision Guide
The core trade-off is market access versus cost. Free zones are cheaper and faster, starting from AED 5,750 a year with licences in 3–5 business days. A mainland licence costs more, but lets you sell directly to UAE customers and bid on government contracts. With no offshore registry, these are the only two pillars.
Choose a free zone if:
Your customers are primarily outside the UAE, or you invoice internationally
You’re a media, publishing, creative, trading, industrial or R&D business matching one of the five zones
You want the lowest realistic UAE entry cost
You don’t need a retail shop or direct sales to UAE consumers
Choose SEDD mainland if:
You need to sell directly to UAE businesses or consumers without a distributor
You’re opening a physical retail location, restaurant or facility in Sharjah
You need to bid on Sharjah or UAE government contracts
Your activities require a Sharjah-specific commercial presence
How to Start a Business in Sharjah: Company Registration Step by Step
Choose your route: free zone or mainland, then the zone or SEDD licence category that matches your activity.
Reserve your trade name: submit 3 name options to the free zone authority or to SEDD.
Prepare and apostille documents: passport copies, photos and application form, with Indian documents apostilled via MEA India. Mainland limited liability companies also need a memorandum of association.
Submit and receive your licence: 3–5 business days for most free zones, or 7–14 business days for a SEDD mainland licence, which also requires a registered office before issue.
Visa, Emirates ID and bank account: investor visa, medical, biometrics and Emirates ID, then bank account activation, taking 2–4 weeks.
Registering a Company in Sharjah from India: What Indian Founders Must File
FEMA Compliance for Sharjah Company Formation
Indian residents investing in a Sharjah company are making an Overseas Direct Investment (ODI) under FEMA, which is a legal requirement rather than optional. This means filing Form ODI-1 with an Authorised Dealer bank before or at first investment, and an Annual Performance Report (APR) each year confirming operational status and any dividend remittances. Remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, up to USD 250,000 a year, must retain proper LRS documentation.
Indian Document Apostille for Sharjah Company Registration
All Indian government documents for Sharjah registration need an MEA apostille, since notarisation alone is insufficient. Documents requiring apostille include passport copies, power of attorney, board resolutions, and certificates of incorporation for Indian parent companies. MEA apostille processing takes 5–7 working days.
Sending Setup Fees from India
Sending money from India to pay Sharjah setup fees is permitted under LRS. Best practice is to remit via the company’s bank account with the correct ODI or service-payment purpose code, and to retain documentation for FEMA compliance.

Sharjah Company Setup: Extended FAQ
How long does company registration in Sharjah take?
Free zone licences are typically issued in 3–5 business days, and a SEDD mainland licence in 7–14 business days. The investor visa, Emirates ID and bank account activation add a further 2–4 weeks.
Does Sharjah offer offshore company formation?
No. Sharjah does not operate an offshore registry, so every Sharjah business is either a free zone or a mainland entity. Founders who need an offshore holding structure typically look at RAK ICC in Ras Al Khaimah or JAFZA Offshore in Dubai instead.
What is the minimum capital requirement for a Sharjah company?
For most free zone companies in Sharjah there is no paid-up minimum in practice. SEDD mainland limited liability companies have no minimum capital requirement for most activities since the 2021 Companies Law amendments.
Can a Sharjah company operate across the UAE?
A SEDD mainland company can trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE and bid on government contracts. A free zone company trades within its zone and internationally, and generally needs a distributor to sell to UAE mainland customers.
